Posts | China-Russia Relations on the Rise and the Xi-Vlad “Bromance”
Another great FT piece, this one on China-Russia relations, which Vladimir Putin described as “on the rise and undergoing the best period in their centuries-long history.”
Some key highlights of the piece, as I see it:
- Xi Jinping chose Russia as his first foreign trip as President
- Putin and Xi Jinping have met more than a dozen times since 2013
- Xi Jinping sat at Putin’s side last year during Russia’s 70th anniversary celebrations of the defeat of Nazi Germany
- Putin has said that Russia-China relations are “on the rise and undergoing the best period in their centuries-long history.”
The piece, however, also smartly notes that the high-level bromance between the two leaders is not matched by the deep business and cultural linkages that either country has with the West.
I had written for Quartz awhile back on the “bromance” between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The Xi Jinping-Vladimir Putin bromance is also worth watching.
